Walter Van Beirendonck is a Belgian fashion designer. He is also Director of the fashion school at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. Today, we want to tell you more about Mr. Walter Van Beirendonk and his vision on Fashion’s New Order.
Van Beirendonck has been in fashion for almost 40 years, which something atypical within fashion. His cartoonish and colorful collections are a different offer in the market. He puts creativity freedom first and also quality. His collections have always been a means to vindicate causes that defends such as the LGBT collective, climate change and the lack of diversity in the fashion world.
We were very surprised with his most recent SS21 collection. Since many companies were closed during the COVID-19 lockdowns he struggled to find the fabrics for his new collection. Therefore, Van Beirendonck had to use the fabrics that had in his studio and, of course, he did not have enough to develop all the looks. Finaly, he decided to make the entire collection in miniature and, surprisingly, it had a very good effect on the selling.
Van Beirendonck has contributed to men’s fashion with his outlandish and even humorous designs. However, he believes that many people and the fashion press don’t take him seriously. Serious fashion press hardly show his work. Fortunately, his brand is finding a young audience interested in his clothes. He attributes some of the success of how he works with his own rules: on a small scale and with a small team.
