Believe it or not, there are still small leather goods workshops that make one-off leather products. Today, we would like to show you a local manufacturer that specialises in the manufacturing of bespoke storage chests and trunks, Breton. We were invited to see Breton’s workshop and got impressed about their craftsmanship and meticulous care of the details in each piece. See some photos below.

The Spanish leather goods industry is in very good shape. According to the latest official data (download it here in Spanish)  , Spanish leather goods manufacturers have consolidated their international expansion in spite of the world’s generalised recession. The exports of manufacturing services have increased 17% in 2011 with a turnover of more than 511 millions Euros (Exports).

Made in Spain’ leather goods are very much appreciated not only by fashion brands and independent designers but also by the final customer, who is more and more informed and interested in what is behind the product they are buying.

Andalusia is the region that still holds the biggest cluster of companies dedicated to the manufacturing of leather accessories, most of which are based in the town of Ubrique  and the surrounding towns such as Prado del Rey .

American fashion designer, Rick Owens  launched a new series of leather accessories featuring a metallic gold finish that is present throughout his AW’12 collection. We really like the contrast between the metallic leather and the matt edge dye.  Hope you enjoy them.

Leather goods merchants were the first transmitters of the savoir-faire of this area in modern times. Isn´t these people worthy of homage? They were the first sales agents of the leather goods factories that decided to create a brand. It was the owner of the workshop himself who took this role. He used to pack the collection of leather goods in a “hard-to-wear” trunk and drive all through certain geographical areas. He visited shops of leather accessories and offered his products to them. After several weeks of travelling, he came back to the factory and started to produce the orders.

Nowadays, this way of selling is not as common as it used to be. Most Spanish Leather Goods Manufacturers have their own e-shop or display their products on ecommerce platforms of third parties

We strongly believe in modern technologies as a way of reaching your potential clients and a way of being closer to them. However, the “physical contact” the physical interaction (Experience) between buyers and makers cannot be substituted by these technologies. Leather goods are made by People

Most people may agree that Italian luxury brand Bottega Veneta is mostly recognised by their woven bags. You may also imagine that only the most skilled Artisans are able to make it with the quality standards that luxury brands offer. The video below shows part of the process. I hope you enjoy it.

Most of the input that we receive from brands dedicated to the design and manufacturing of leather goods refers to the value of craftsmanship, tradition and the fact that their products have been handmade one by one using the “most genuine” leather. After not much thought or reflection one may think that there may be some minor changes and/or “imperfections” as part of the “one-by-one” making process. However, these minor “imperfections” are not always accepted and understood by buyers/clients… So, … where is the value of handmade leather goods? Is it in the ability of the leather workers to make handmade copies? Should clients accept these minor imperfections?

We are using three different colours, green, navy and hazelnut brown… You can see the Hand dying process on the video below. We hope you enjoy it.
