Edge dying (or edge staining) is the process by which the sharp edges of the leather are rounded by applying an acrylic dye in order to hold down the edge fibers of the leather. Several dye layers may be applied in order to get a soft touch on the edges, letting each coat thoroughly dry before the next is applied. A thorough burnish is also necessary to remove any hard finish.

Today, we want to introduce another traditional industry of Andalusia, Artisan Furniture Manufacturing Industry, which has traditionally been  linked to luxury.

The town of Sanlúcar de Barrameda , located right in the end of the river Guadalquivir and opposite Doñana National Park, is well known by its carpenters and cabinet-makers, who have been making the nicest furniture in Andalusia for more than 500 years.

Once all the pieces composing the leather item have been cut, they must be carefully assembled. This process is developed between the leather worker and the seamstress, who must work side by side in order to get the perfect finish.

The leather pieces are reinforced, when necessary, and the leather worker starts to join each of these pieces as if they were the pieces of a puzzle. This is one of the most time consuming tasks in the whole process since it is the actual making of the leather item, as customers will perceive it.

When people are asked about luxury, they tend to say words and concepts such as “Exclusivity”, “Unique”, “High Quality” and “Craftsmanship”. Luxury brands like Louis Vuitton and Mont Blanc have always worked hard so that their target public can associate their products to the above concepts. Today, we want to share with you two examples of these communication campaigns that worked very well. They are clear examples that tradition, heritage and savoir-faire are highly valued in the so-called “Luxury Universe”.

We managed to get several quite old photos of some workshops and manufacturers from Ubrique, which we want to share with our readers. The photos were taken more than 60 years ago, therefore the workshops in the photos have seen some generations of leather workers pass by and, in so doing, they have become icons of the savoir-faire of the leather industry in Andalusia.

The older generations of leather workers started to learn the job when they were around 17 years old. At first, they were responsible for very basic tasks and, as they learned the job, they became more implied in the whole manufacturing process.

Leather thinning or splitting is the preparation of the thickness of the leather for a particular work. Leather thinning can be applied both to the whole surface of the leather (Leather Splitting) or just to the edges of a particular leather piece (Edge Thinning).

Did you know that a wallet could be composed of more than 50 different small pieces? Each of the pieces must be cut with the greatest precision in order to get the highest quality. Leather goods manufacturers in Ubrique (Andalusia) are using three main cutting methods.

Cardboard-Moulds-for-Hand-Cutting-Leather

  • · Hand cut: Only the most skilful cutters are able to cut the leather by hand. In order to do this, a cardboard pattern and a sharp blade are used. The cutter must also be able to select the proper areas of the leather for each part of the leather item.

  • · Die Cutting (Press Machine): When there is a considerable amount of items to be produced, a metal cutting piece is made for each piece of which the leather item is composed. A press machine is used to cut the leather

  • · Automatic cutting system (CAD/CAM Technology) : Although the investment in this kind of technology is very high, automatic-cutting system provide manufacturers with a multifunctional tool for the current times. CAD/CAM technology is really helping manufacturers to meet the needs and demands of the market since it helps you develop critical processes in the manufacturing of a leather item such as pattern making, easy pattern amendment and prototype & sample making. Automatic cutting systems are ideal for small batch production.

Betangible had the opportunity to attend today’s presentation of Sibling’s AW11 Collection 6 at London Fashion Week. We got delighted at some leather details they used in the collection such as the leather shoulder pieces, the knitted scarf with a leather belt closure and the leather closure of some pockets.

From Betangible we encourage Sibling to keep using leather in their collections. Perhaps, this is the beginning of an long lasting relationship between Sibling and Leather. Will we see Sibling’s leather accessories shortly?
