Today, we are going to talk with the founder of a company that use a very widespread technique by many clients. This technique allows fashion designers show their creativity.

Pileus is a Ubrique based company founded by Alberto Moreno. They are leaders in Leather Printing and this technology respects all the natural characteristics of leather such as softness and warmth.

Betangible: Could you tell us what possibilities Pileus offer in the Leather Industry?

Alberto: We are specialized in Leather Printing. This technology allows to print on any kind of leather (light and dark), also with grains, with full colour photographic quality. There are so many possibilities… as many as the designer has in their head. Our clients can express their creativity in a piece of leather. We have clients in the fashion industry, interior design, etc.

Betangible: Do you think that customers are aware about the use of this technology to create their designs?

Alberto: Nowadays, technology is everywhere, and we live with it every day. Designers can use this machine to be different from their competitors, because their designs will be one-of-a kind.

Betangible: Ubrique has been working in the Manufacturing of Leather Accessories for centuries. Tradition is the word that may define this job and this town. However, through Pileus this tradition could be changed to Avant-garde. Do you think that Pileus can help make a change in this matter?

Alberto: Of course! Ubrique need the technology to improve the leather industry. Luxury Fashion Houses and High End Brands are more and more familiar with the use of the technology. We need to work in this matter and mix both: tradition and technology.

Alberto kindly showed us how the machine works. He used a leather with grain and the result was perfect as you can watch in the following video.

In an previous post we talked about ‘Sustainability in Leather Goods Industry in Ubrique’. How Ubrique carry out different actions in this matter. One of the most important facts is the Labour Conditions that Leather Goods Manufacturer apply. Therefore, we are going to develop this controvesial topic in fashion nowadays.

Today, people are very aware of the fact that everyone must work in good Labour Conditions. When people buy something, especially in the fashion industry, they think how and in what conditions this piece was made. Has this item been made with appropriate labour conditions? Is this design authentic? Is it handcrafted?

Many people think that The Fashion Industry lack mechanism that shows transparency in this matter. This must be solved somehow. We must to work together to get a sustainable fashion. There is an organization that is worried about this concern: The Ethical Fashion Forum. This platform was born in 2006 to develop a collaborative movement which would transform social and environmental standards in the fashion industry. They try to “support and promote sustainable practices; facilitate collaboration; raise awareness; and provide the tools and resources needed to reduce poverty and reduce environmental damage”.

With regards the industry in Ubrique, the main figure of this industry is, without a doubt, the Leather Worker. Companys know the value of this figure. Therefore, they are fully aware of the compliance of all the labor rights; such as salary, working hours and extra hours as well as family conciliation.

All the above is highly appreciated by High End and Luxury Fashion Houses. What’s more, these Fashion Brands not only demand that work conditions are respected according to the legislation of each country, but also they monitor that these conditions can be improved every year. We believe that the respect and appreciation of the Leather Worker and their work conditions is a MUST in the Leather Goods Manufacturing Industry globally.

Hybrid Fashion is a very widespread trend. In the past, people spoke about fashion for women. Also, fashion companies were managing by men. Nowadays, this has changed a lot. Leather Goods Manufacturers have witnessed this.

People may wear whatever they want since fashion is in the streets more than ever before. These codes (seen in the streets) are used by the fashion industry. Designers take ideas from streets and bring them to their shows. Moreover, they are realising that there is a very strong movement for Unisex Fashion today.

Palomo Spain is a very clear example of all the above. Let me tell you that he produces all his leather peaces in Ubrique. This brand was created by Alejandro Gómez, a Spanish designer born in a small town of Córdoba (Spain). Since he was a child, he was a lover of fashion. He studied in the London College of Fashion in United Kingdom. Palomo Spain released his first collection in Madrid Fashion Week in 2016 at the age of 24. He also presented their collections in cities like Mosco, New York and Paris. The designs of Palomo Spain are always characterized by their transgressive and rule-breaking approach. All the “stereotypes of gender” are trespassed so that he claims “My clothes are love and sex”.

The bags, belts and small leather goods of his collections are made in Ubrique. He believes in the quality and the know-how of the main figure: The Leather Worker. In his lastest campaign (Fall/Winter 18.19), we can see how he uses leather pieces in many of his designs.

How sustainable is Leather Goods Manufacturing? Is leather itself a sustainable product? What do Leather Goods Manufacturers in Ubrique (Spain) do in order to meet the Regulations in this concern?

In the current times, consumers are getting very concerned about the products they are buying. The Fashion industry is more and more worried about sustainability and companies work hard to be more responsible and transparent. In this article we are going to talk briefly about the different actions that “Ubrique” carry out in this matter.

Firstly, all the leather (we use) is a by-product of the food chain. We are not happy with the idea that animals are killed just to get their skin. This is something that has to do with ethics and responsibility too. All leather suppliers (we use) have got the certification and traceability in this concern.

In Ubrique there is also a selective collection of leather leftover. All the leather that cannot be used for a handbag go to Recycling Plants. Once there, the leather is transformed and reused in new products.

The sustainability of the industry is also very closely related to the Labour Conditions, ie. Salaries, Health and Security at the work place, etc. We will also try to develop this topic in a future article.
